Centrifuge Pump Stands and Platform for The Perth Mint
The Perth Mint procured three centrifuge pumps designed to wash acid from bulk silver crystals, aiming to enhance the efficiency of their silver refining operations. To ensure safe and effective operation, custom-built, heavy-duty tripod stands and a load-rated platform were required. These components needed to meet stringent industrial standards, offering secure access to the pumps for various operations while maintaining the safety of the workspace.
The Challenge
The project faced significant challenges. First, the pumps generated significant vibration during operation, which posed a risk of shifting the stands. This required the stands to be securely fixed with suitable fasteners. Additionally, the pumps were arranged in a triangular configuration, making a standard rectangular platform unsuitable, as it would leave gaps that posed potential safety hazards. The installation area was highly corrosive, necessitating a design able to withstand such an environment. The existing overhead crane also restricted the maximum height of the platform, while acid waste containers needed to be positioned under it, further limiting design options. Finally, the platform needed to support varying personnel weights and provide easy access to the pumps for different operational tasks.
Our Solution
To address these challenges, we conducted a site visit, met with the client and reviewed project requirements, including the environmental constraints and space limitations. Using SolidWorks CAD software, we developed 3D models and 2D drawings to design a modular platform that would be easier to handle, transport and assemble. The design eliminated the issues caused by the triangular pump arrangement by covering all gaps between the pumps and stands. The platform was designed according to AS1657 standards and incorporated the VSD mounting structure to supply energy to the pumps. Hot-Dip Galvanizing (HDG) and powder coatings were applied to prevent corrosion in the harsh environment. We also conducted load tests to ensure the platform could safely support personnel and withstand operational demands. After receiving client approval, we moved forward with the final design and manufacturing.
The Result
The project was successfully manufactured on time, delivering a fully functional and safe platform, pump stand and VSD mounting assembly. The modular design solved handling and transportation challenges, ensuring the system was easily moved and installed on-site. The Perth Mint operators benefitted from easier access to the pumps for maintenance, reduced manual loading and unloading of silver crystals and improved overall safety. These improvements led to a significant increase in the mint’s silver processing capacity, rising by 5 tons per week. Following the project’s success, we were awarded additional contracts for designing and manufacturing more materials handling equipment, further enhancing the mint’s operational efficiency. This ongoing collaboration reflects the long-term impact of our solution.
